UTSA Fires Head Football Coach Frank Wilson

UTSA has just fired head football coach Frank Wilson.  Coach Wilson was the second head coach for UTSA and coached the Roadrunners from 2016 to 2019.

Here is a look at the UTSA Roadrunners football team since 2012 (the first year UTSA competed in the FBS); under two different head coaches - Coker and Wilson.  As you will notice, UTSA had an above average season in 2017, but have slipped the last two seasons.

Below is the UTSA Roadrunners production rank (total, offense, defense, and the average and worst teams) since 2012 using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com, as well as lines for head coaching firing/retiring.  More details about the program under Wilson is provided below; including a link to his original contract.

Frank Wilson [2016-2019]

2016
In Wilson's first season at UTSA, the Roadrunners finished the regular season at 6-6 and were bowl eligible, where they played the #33 ranked New Mexico Lobos, losing (20-23) to finish 6-7 overall.  The Roadrunners played against an “average” strength of schedule, meaning the Roadrunners  strength of schedule was plus or minus one standard deviation of the "league" average strength of schedule.  UTSA's best regular season victory against #48 ranked Middle Tennessee State by a score of (45-25) and their worst loss was to #116 ranked Arizona State by a score of (28-32).  UTSA finished the season as the #71 ranked team overall, with the #67 ranked offense and the #69 ranked defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.

2017
The Roadrunners finished the regular season at 6-5 (the first game against Houston on Sept. 2nd was cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey) and were bowl eligible, but uninvited.  This was a shame since UTSA had one of the most dominant defenses and would have been great to see their defense play a team from an alternative conference.  The Roadrunners played against a “much easier” strength of schedule, meaning that UTSA's SOS was higher than two standard deviations of the "league" average SOS; (but again they only played 11 games).  UTSA's best regular season victory against #63 ranked Marshall by a score of (9-7) and UTSA's worst loss was to #98 ranked FIU by a score of (7-14).  The Roadrunners finished the season as the #38 ranked team overall, with the #99 ranked offense and the #3 ranked defense [a top 5 defense] using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.

2018
UTSA finished the regular season at 3-9, while playing against an “average” strength of schedule and were bowl ineligible.  UTSA's best regular season victory against in state rival #75 ranked Texas State by a score of (25-21) and their worst loss was to #95 ranked Baylor (20-32).  UTSA finished the season as the #126 ranked team overall, with the #130 ranked offense [worst in all of the FBS] and the #80 ranked defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.

2019*
At the conclusion of the regular season, UTSA fired head football coach Frank Wilson after going 4-8.  UTSA played against an “average” strength of schedule.  UTSA's best victory was against currently ranked #105 Rice by a score of (31-27) and their worst loss was to currently ranked #92 North Texas by a score of (3-45).  UTSA's current production rankings are:  #117 team overall, with the #107 offense and the #11 defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.
