2012 Preseason Big 12 Football Media Poll

Yesterday, the Big 12 football conference released their pre-season media poll.  In the table below are the media first place votes, and total votes from the pre-season poll.  Next to that are the wins and losses from last season (including any post-season bowl games).  Finally, the last three columns are the rankings (out of 120 NCAA FBS schools) in terms of the NCAA production model for the team's total production rank, offensive production rank and defensive production rank.

I think I will come back to this at the end of the season and see how well the media (and last years model's ranking) relate to the end of the 2012 season for the Big 12 conference.  Here is the data.  Note that West Virginia (using the NCAA production model) was better than any of the current Big 12 schools (lower 2011 Total means that they were higher ranked in that model than any of the other teams in the Big 12 for this season).  It will be interesting to see how the Mountaineers do playing in a different conference.

NCAA Athletic Department Finances 2007

Today we move to the 2007 academic year and look at the same variables as yesterday: reported profits (using both generated and allocated revenues), profits that are adjusted by subtracting out transfers (or subsidies), and the actual subsidy amount just like I did for the 2006 year.

The school with the biggest reported profit (Profit 1) is the University of Florida of $15,669,822 and the schools with the biggest reported loss is Iowa State University of -$9,448,172.  In terms of generated profits (Profit 2), the University of Michigan had a $14,102,584 profit and the school with the biggest generated loss is Rutgers with a loss of -$21,230,408.  The school with the biggest subsidy in 2007 was Eastern Michigan University with a subsidy of $22,054,657.

Here is the entire list of schools from USA Today's NCAA athletic department financial database.

NCAA Athletic Department Finances 2006

A few months ago the USA Today reported college athletic department finances for the last six seasons.  So what I did was to download the data to answer some questions about NCAA athletic department finances.  First I want to look at total revenues, total expenses and "profits or losses" for athletic departments.  In order to do that I am going to adjust for athletic department generated revenues as opposed to athletic department overall revenues.  The difference will be any subsidies that athletic departments receive from students (as student fees to the athletic department) and school funds that are transfers from either the college/university or state government to the athletic department.  Thus there is a difference between generated and allocated revenues, with student fees and schools funds as allocated to the athletic departments.

So with that in mind, here are the athletic department profits/losses using both total revenues with the subsidies (labeled Profit 1), and total revenues without the subsidies (labeled Profit 2).  Given that USA Today has published data for six years, I will look at each year over the next few days, starting with 2006.  Now, not all NCAA schools are included in the USA Today database, so please keep this in mind as you look at the data presented below.   Also, as you will notice Oklahoma State has a huge profit due to T. Boones Pickens $165 million donation to OSU for that year.  Twenty schools ending with a generated and allocated profit exactly equal to $0.  None had a subsidy of $0, thus the subsidies were equal to the athletic programs generated losses.  Finally, note that only LSU and Nebraska had $0 of subsidies for the 2006 year.

In terms of generated and allocated profit, Oklahoma State had the highest profit (Profit 1) with $161,063,918, and Houston had the greatest loss of $10,328,595.  Turning to only generated profits (i.e. Profit 2), Oklahoma State had the greatest profit (again due to the one time donation by Mr. Pickens) of $156,533,782; Oregon State with the greatest loss of $22,839,510 and also Oregon State with the greatest subsidy of $21,116,460 for that year.

Black = Profit; Red = Loss.
