Tom Arth Fired as Akron Zips Head Football Coach

Tom Arth was recently fired as the head football coach at Akron.  Arth was 3-23 overall during his tenure as the Zips head football coach.  Here is a look at the Akron Zips football program since 2008 (the first year that I collected all the variables needed for the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model).  This time period only covers the last two seasons under head football coach JD Brookhart (2008-2009), Rob Ianello (2010-2011), Terry Bowden (2012-2018) and Tom Arth (2019-2021*).  After the figure below is a more detailed look at the Akron Zips football program during head coach Arth's tenure based on the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model using data provided by www.cfbstats.com.  (The vertical school color bars represent seasons where head coaches changed).

Tom Arth [contract]

2019
Akron finished the regular season at 0-12, and were bowl ineligible.  The Zips played against an “easier” strength of schedule (SOS), meaning that the Zips SOS was between one and two standard deviations higher than the average SOS for the "league".  Akron's worst loss was to #130 ranked Massachusetts (29-37).  Akron was the #127 ranked team overall (a top 10 worst performing team), with the #130 ranked offense (the worst offense in all of the FBS) and the #101 ranked defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.

2020
Akron finished the COVID-19 shortened regular season at 1-5, playing against an “average” strength of schedule (SOS), meaning that Akron's SOS was plus or minus one standard deviation of the "leagues" average SOS.  Akron's ONLY regular season victory was against #126 ranked Bowling Green (31-3) and their worst loss was to #94 ranked Miami (OH) (7-38).  Akron was the #124 ranked team overall (a top 10 worst performing team), with the #119 ranked offense and the #78 ranked defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.

2021*
After a 2-6 start to the 2021 season Arth was fired.  Akron played against an “average” strength of schedule (SOS) up to this point in the season.  Akron's best win was against currently ranked #99 Bowling Green by a score of (35-20) and their current worst loss was to #119 ranked Temple by a score of (24-45).  Akron is currently the #122 ranked team overall (top 10 worst programs), with the #105 ranked offense and the #125 ranked defense (top 10 worst defenses) using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.
