Les Miles Out at Kansas

Recently, the University of Kansas parted ways with head football coach Les Miles, after allegations of mis-conduct at LSU.  Kansas was 3-18 during Miles tenure.

Here is a look at the Kansas Jayhawks football program since 2008 (the first year that I collected all the variables needed for the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model).  This time period spans the last two seasons under head coach Mark Mangino (2008-2009), head coach Turner Gill (2010-2011), head coach Charlie Weis (2012-2014), head coach David Beaty (2015-2018), and the two seasons under Les Miles (2019-2020).  After the figure below is a more detailed look at the Kansas Jayhawks football program during head coach Miles' tenure based on the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model using data provided by www.cfbstats.com.  (The vertical school color bars represent seasons where head coaches changed).

Les Miles (Contract; Settlement)

2019
Kansas finished the regular season at 3-9, and were again bowl ineligible.  The Jayhawks played against an “average” strength of schedule (SOS), meaning that the Jayhawks' SOS was plus or minus one standard deviation of the "leagues" average SOS for that season.  Kansas' best regular season victory was against #83 ranked Texas Tech (37-34) and their worst loss was to #113 ranked West Virginia (24-29).  Kansas was the #122 ranked team overall (one of the top 10 least productive teams), with the #114 ranked offense and the #120 ranked defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.

2020
Kansas finished the regular season at 0-9, while playing against a "tougher" SOS, meaning that Kansas' SOS was between one and two standard deviations below the "league" average SOS.  The Jayhawks' worst loss of the season was to #97 ranked Baylor (14-47).  Kansas was the #127 ranked team overall (the LEAST productive team), with the #113 ranked offense and the #125 ranked defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.
