Matt Wells out as Texas Tech Head Football Coach

Matt Wells was fired as head football coach at Texas Tech.  Wells was 13-17 during his tenure as the Red Raiders head football coach.  Here is a look at the Texas Tech Red Raiders' football program since 2008 (the first year that I collected all the variables needed for the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model).  This time period spans the last two seasons of Mike Leach as head football coach (2008-2009), head coach Tommy Tuberville (2010-2012), head coach Kliff Kingsbury (2013-2018), and Matt Wells (2019-2021*).  After the figure below is a more detailed look at the Texas Tech Red Raiders football program during head coach Wells' tenure based on the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model using data provided by www.cfbstats.com.  (The vertical school color bars represent seasons where head coaches changed).

After a 5-3 start to the 2021 season Wells was fired.  Texas Tech played against an “average” strength of schedule (SOS) up to this point in the season.  Texas Tech's best win was against currently ranked #16 Houston by a score of (38-21) and their current worst loss was to #105 ranked TCU by a score of (31-52).  Texas Tech is currently the #28 ranked team overall, with the #29 ranked offense and the #62 ranked defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.

Nick Rolovich Fired as Washington State's Head Football Coach

Yesterday it was reported that Nick Rolovich was fired from his position as Washington State's head football coach.  Rolovich tenure as head football coach started with the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season and was the head coach during the first seven games of the 2021 season.  During that time, Washington State was 5-6 overall.

After a 4-3 start to the 2021 season Rolovich was fired with cause (speculation is his refusal to conform to the state COVID vaccine mandate).  Washington State played against an “average” strength of schedule (SOS) up to this point in the season.  Washington State's best win was against currently ranked #22 Oregon State by a score of (31-24) and their current worst loss was to #94 ranked Utah State by a score of (23-26).  Washington State is currently the #55 ranked team overall, with the #48 ranked offense and the #57 ranked defense using the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from www.cfbstats.com.
