Yesterday it was reported that Nick Rolovich was fired from his position as Washington State's head football coach. Rolovich tenure as head football coach started with the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season and was the head coach during the first seven games of the 2021 season. During that time, Washington State was 5-6 overall.
Here is a look at the Washington State Courgar
football program since 2008 (the
first year that I collected all the variables needed for the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model).
This time period spans head coach Paul Wulff
(2008-2011),
head coach Mike Leach (2011-2019), and Nick Rolovich
(2020-2021*). After the figure below is a more detailed look at
the Washington State Cougars football program during head coach Rolovich's
tenure based on the Complex Invasion College Football Production Model using data provided by www.cfbstats.com. (The vertical school color bars represent seasons where head coaches changed).

2020
Washington State finished the COVID-19 shortened regular season at 1-3, playing against an “average”
strength
of schedule (SOS), meaning that the Cougars SOS was within plus or minus one standard deviation of the "league" SOS. Washington State's
best (only) regular season victory was against #85 ranked Oregon State (38-28) and their worst
loss was to #62 ranked Utah (28-45).
Washington State was the #107 ranked team overall, with the #116 ranked
offense and the #31 ranked defense using the
Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from
www.cfbstats.com.
2021*
After a 4-3 start to the 2021 season Rolovich was fired with cause (speculation is his refusal to conform to the state COVID vaccine mandate). Washington State played against an “average”
strength
of schedule (SOS) up to this point in the season. Washington State's best win was against currently ranked #22 Oregon State by a score of (31-24) and their current worst loss was to #94 ranked Utah State by a score of (23-26).
Washington State is currently the #55 ranked team overall, with the #48 ranked
offense and the #57 ranked defense using the
Complex Invasion College Football Production Model from the data provided from
www.cfbstats.com.
